Seminarinhalt

Stata is a broadly applied software for statistical data analysis within the social sciences. This course aims to give participants a first introduction to the usage of Stata. Stata allows users to manage and transform data, perform a variety of statistical analyses, and visualize and export analytical results. We start with an introduction to the interface of Stata and the different options to work with this software (using the drop-down menus or do-files). During the course, we will mainly work in do-files, in order to support a reproducible practice for scientific materials from the beginning. We will then concentrate on the most important commands and efficient data wrangling and descriptive statistics, before finally diving into some basic inferential statistics. Hence, a basic understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics is recommended to best follow the material.  Within these sections, we will practice the visualization and exporting of results (via Word or Latex).

We encourage participants during the course to practice dealing with Stata's built-in help function. Additionally, the focus is given to using online resources to find answers to programming problems.

Participants should know the fundamentals of Stata at the end of this class and be able to advance their analysis skills on their own.

Zielgruppe

Participants will find the course useful if:
  • They are new to Stata and want a gentle introduction.
  • They have a basic understanding of data analysis.
  • They want to get started with Stata in a group environment where questions are encouraged and pre-existing projects are welcome.

  • Lernziel

By the end of the course participants will:
  • manipulate and prepare their data with Stata
  • be able to do basic descriptive and inferential analysis with Stata
  • create and export visual and tabular output from Stata
  • know how to use the Stata help function and efficiently look for online help
  •
    Organisational structure of the course
The workshop will be structured around approximately a total of three hours of classroom instructions and three hours of hands-on exercises, tutorials, or lab sessions per day. The exercises, tutorials, and lab sessions as well as classroom instructions will be integrated into different teaching blocks of 1.5 hours. Each teaching block will have classroom instructions as well as smaller hands-on exercises following the needs of the participants. Generally, we try to provide a balanced amount of hands-on exercises, instructions, and - if wished-for - implementation of personal projects.

During the lab sessions, participants will mainly be given group and individual exercises to work on. In summary, the exercises will have a project structure, meaning that participants should answer a specific main question with their data analysis during the day.

    Voraussetzungen

No prior knowledge is required, but a basic understanding of or experience with descriptive and inferential statistics is strongly recommended.

    Software and hardware requirements
Participants need to have an installation of a recent Stata version.
